The 3rd Gymnasio of Larissa visited Palermo from 11th to 16th February in older to participate in the first meeting of the European project “OVER WATER”.
The five partners France, Lithuania, Greece, Italy and Bulgaria met in Italy to take part in activities prepared by the host country and present their river and its history. Our school presented the history of the Pineios River. The Greek team consisted of 2 teachers and 8 students (4 girls and 4 boys). Of the 8 students 5 were hosted by Italian families and the rest stayed at the hotel with the teachers.
It was a well organised 4-days programme full of actions, visits and an expedition. We visited the Cathedral and the ancient washhouses in Cefalu village, the Zisa Palace, the Royal Palace and the Palatina Chapel. We also visited “The Sirocco Chamber” a large underground gallery crossed by a spring water channel where people could find fresh air during the hottest days. We walked around the historical centre and admired the remarkable monuments like the Theatro Massimo the 3rd largest opera house in Europe, the Piazza Pretoria and the Cathedral. The most famous one is a small temple devoted to Virgin, named Maria La Martorana, whose owner was George Antiocheas a Greek admiral and Minister of the 2nd Rogirou in Sicily. It’s known for the 12th century mosaics constructed by skilled Byzantine craftsmen. It is considered the crossroad of the different civilizations that passed through Sicily where each invader left his trace.
Last but not least the Water Lab was an excellent activity. All the students were separated in 3 groups and attended 6 small experiments about the water and its properties 90 minutes total duration. They had been prepared by Italian teachers and were executed by Italian students. The rest of the students had to repeat them and at the end of the activity they played a kahoot game about water based on the knowledge they had learned from the experiments.
For all of us the trip in Palermo was a memorable experience and the Italian hospitality was really hearty and sincere.
